"Really? You want to run away?" Daniel was amazed, he knew she wasn't happy where she was, but he'd never thought she would do something to drastic.
"Yes, really. I've thought it over as much as I'm going to, I want you to come with me. I'm sick of this place, and all it's... rules. I'm tired of being expected to do so much, I want to have fun and see something outside of these walls. Something other than dresses, and dances, and.. expectations." Isabelle found herself telling him everything, all that she had kept to herself for years and years. The two of them sat in the shaded garden on a wooden bench and talked into the day. Well, Isabelle talked, Daniel sat and listened.
"So, are you coming with me or not?" Isabelle leaned in closer to him, willing him to say yes. "Isabelle, you have been my friend for many years now, you know that I am there for you no matter what you decide and if you want to leave this place, I can find no other way but to go with you." Immediately, Daniel stood up from the bench, grabbed a sack from the garden wall, and began to fill it with vegetables.
Isabelle stood, confused at his quick decision. She knew he was a good friend, but she had expected to have to talk him into it a little more. "But, Daniel.. what about your job? Aren't you worried to leave it?"
"My job? What job? I clean dung out from under sweaty warhorses all day. I'd just as soon hang myself from the parapet than live in this castle for the rest of my days, there are no adventures in the life of a stableboy." Daniel looked back at her, seeing the worry etched into her face. "Listen, if you want to do this, we're going to have to have a plan. A princess doesn't just leave her father's castle, she either stays or is kidnapped. A stableboy caught with the king's daughter will not be treated as a friend of the family, if you know what I'm getting at."
"Gather all you need and meet me here at midnight tonite, we can sneak out of the castle through the postern gate; they don't guard it heavily, I know."
Isabelle was scared, but terribly excited. "Thank you Daniel, I'll go pack right now." She grabbed his hand and smiled at him, looking into his eyes for a moment before turning swiftly into the deepening shadows of dusk and disappearing behind the swinging wooden gate.
Daniel wiped the nervous sweat from his brow and bent back towards the vegetable patch. If Adam returned and found his vegetables not picked, he'd... well, he would be too drunk for much action, but Daniel decided they'd be better picked anyway.
