What does it mean to be a real friend

Bernard sighed and folded his arms across his chest. “Daniel, why do you let her do this to you?”
Daniel remained kneeling as he spoke. “She’s my friend sir, and she’s stubborn.” Daniel risked a glance up and found a small smile cracking Bernard’s otherwise grim face.
“Yes she is at that isn’t she.” The smile vanished as Bernard continued. “All right, friends stick together and help one another right?” The boy nodded so the knight continued. “Friends also tell one another when they are wrong.” Now Daniel did look up, confusion written all over his features. “When our young princess does become Queen she is going to need a friend she can trust not only to be there for her, but to also tell her when she is mistaken. The King and Queen both trust the knights to stand united in public. However in private we are encouraged to voice our own opinions. This helps them to rule more effectively as we can gently point out when they may be taking a bad course of action.”
Daniel paused working that through his mind for several moments, trying to see what his mentor was driving at. Then it hit him. “I have to have the ability to tell her when she is doing something she shouldn’t, don’t I.” a satisfied smile spread across his mentors lips.
“Yes Daniel, when she shirks her duties you have to be the one to gently remind her of what she should do.” Bernard motioned for the youth the rise, which he did. “She can not think that she is free to do whatever crosses her mind. That is not the job of royalty. However she is young and youth likes to run free, you need to be there to help guide her back when she goes a stray.” Bernard turned to go. “Just give it some thought today okay?” Daniel nodded and his mentor strode away.
Daniel sat down, his mind awash with thoughts as he considered the Knights words.
