This choice: Raven is nowhere to be seen • Go Back...
Chapter #5
There's No One There
by: Unknown
Daniel pushed the door of the cottage open, and it creaked. Leaves crunched underfoot inside the doorway, and Daniel remembered guiltily that he usually swept it out for the old magician. It must have really been a long time since I've come, he thought.
The interior of the two-room home was dark. The heavy curtains, designed for privacy, were drawn tightly. A rat dodged across the old wood planking of the floor.
Something was very wrong.
"Raven?" Daniel called worriedly. There was no answer. He peered in closer for a hint of Raven's usual white cloak, and saw nothing.
"Raven!" Daniel said, louder and a bit panicked this time.
He made himself take a breath. He was probably just out...doing an errand. Yeah, that was it. Running an errand.
Daniel cupped his head in one of his hands. Who was he kidding? Since when did the magician ever leave his home for anything?
He had a sudden thought. What if something was wrong, a potion shattered, a bookshelf fallen and squashed Raven flat, or something?
He ventured over the threshold warily. If something could hurt Raven, it could certainly hurt him, too.
Something white flashed in the corner of Daniel's vision. As he turned, he felt a sharp pain hit his head. The room became a bit darker, and Daniel crumpled to the floor.
