Rita secretly loved Mike's strong appetite. Growing up in a close-knit Mexican family, food had always been a currency of love, especially between couples. Every holiday, all of her extended family would gather at her house to celebrate. The center of every celebration was the enormous amounts of food. All of the women who gather in the kitchen to share in the cooking and catch up about work and family. The camaraderie in the kitchen was the picture of traditional sisterhood, but there was a secret competition among her mother and sisters. Each one thought she was the better wife and cook and to prove it, each women made sure to feed their husbands until he could not move, making sure that his plate is never empty and encouraging him to let himself go. Although holidays were a time of special gluttony, Rita's father and uncles all looked well-fed: not a single one of them over 5' 7" or under 280 lbs.
