Kevin, the biggest, meanest bully in the eighth grade, pushed aside sixth-graders Nathan and Jeremy. Kevin, a hard-to-handle child, was a bully to most of the other kids and a challenge for all his teachers, including Ryan. Back when the boy had been in Ryan's sixth-grade class, his teacher had predicted that Kevin was eventually going to prove too much to handle.
Of course, the transformed young man hadn't ever imagine finding himself in such an alarming situation with the out-of-control 13-year-old boy. Now, the bug-man looked up at the terrifying student as the giant boy rushed closer.
"That's one weird bug," Kevin said.
"We saw it first," Nathan declared.
"It's ours," Jeremy backed him up.
"Well, what if I just stomp your stupid bug?" Kevin asked, and he lifted his sneaker.
Ryan felt a cold splash of terror as the emotion seized him like an invisible hand. He stared at the dirty sole of the boy's colossal sneaker. The tread held the shattered traces of other unfortunate bugs. Had those insects been stomped deliberately by the angry boy, or had Kevin even known of the havoc he was causing?
In his blind panic, Ryan froze. He forgot he had wings that could carry him to safety.
