David, his mind already spinning into overdrive over the insane thing that happened to Keith, almost fainted when he opened the door and found himself face-to-face with Jake.
A year before, David had picked up a cute guy whose car had broken down on the freeway. Jake had been nice at first, flirtatious, but suddenly attacked David and kidnapped him, putting him through an emotional torture he would never live down. Unable to get over his trauma, David had visited Jake in prison to achieve some sort of closure and learned more about his tormentor's twisted mind.
Jake stood in the doorway, smiling sweetly at David as if they were best friends. "What are YOU doing here," David demanded in a shaky voice. Keith was utterly forgotten.
"I came to see you, David," said Jake, edging into the doorway so the door could not be shut. "I just got out on parole, and I have nowhere to go. You're my only friend."
"I am NOT your friend," David growled.
Jake's smile grew wider. "Then why did you come to see me in prison? That must mean you like me." He stepped further into the apartment.
In the face of this trauma, David didn't notice the necklace in his pocket start to feel warm.
