Chapter #3

Wolf Demon Magic

    by: Unknown
Kouga paced up and down the line he had made in the dirt and scattered white pebbles as equally spaced as he could to form a ring around the line. Gathering a fistful of dirt in his palm, Kouga threw it forcefully across the pattern. The dirt exploded into a cloud of dust and Kouga soon started to cough. Even despite the coughing, the dust kept on entering his throat and it soon led to violent hacking which made him lightheaded until the cloud had clear.

Kouga shook his head to keep himself atent and circulating. When he was a young boy, Kouga, like most of the other young wolf demons in his tribe, had to perform many tasks and trials in order to be initiated. Many of these tests required physical strength and endurance, but one test in particular required Kouga needing to know the ancient culture of the tribe, including the magic of the wolf demon.

Even though wolf demon magic is a primative magic at best compared to the mystical arts of other demons, Kouga never was any good at it. Kouga was still able to just get by with the rudimental healing spells and tonics that helped bones to set. If he could convince his tribe long ago that he had enough experience in the mystic arts to belong, what was keeping him from performing a spell he had heard of long ago that actually grants the hearts deepest wish.

Unfortunately, Kouga had to strain his mind to remember even what the spell's name was... Well, the name wasn't important anyway. Tapping his head with his index finger, Kouga probed his mind for any strands of thought that might help him remember some of the ingredients- as of now he had only a few.

Kouga sighed... there was no way he could remember the exact ingredients for the spell... it seemed hopeless- Would he have to ask a mage for hel-

The young wolf demon's icy blue eyes snapped wide open when he suddenly remembered the three elements that would most likely cause the spell to work, regardless of any minor ingredients he may have missed. These three components worked for any serious spell, bonded the spirit to the spell, and could allow the spell to read the spirit's deepest intentions and figure out for itself what it should do.

If he could do this correctly, then the spell could figure out to make him bigger by reading the true intentions of his spirit. It could work, but it was very, very risky...

But these three ingredients were so dire... so incredibly strong and final... that even Kouga found himself sweating nervously at what might happen if he improperly acitivated them. Sure, he could do simple spells just fine, but even if he were to move up to spells that were of moderate difficulty, he could seriously hurt himself if he made even one mistake. And when performing spells you don't know and are just recalling from memory, the number ascends to the myriads: countless opportunities to fail.

In order to perform this highest level of wolf magic where the spell determines from the soul what to do, the first thing Kouga needed was graveyard soil, which caused a large bead of sweat to creep down his back and chill his entire body. Graveyard soil was something he wanted to stay away from, and it often contained evil auras. Also, he would be making a serious transgression if he were to disturb a grave, but it was possible to take some soil if done correctly...

The next thing he needed was the fang of a canine demon... He knew it didn't have to be his own, but it was best if it were so. Kouga couldn't even imagine what dear Kagome would say if she saw his dazzling smile permanently disfigured! Kouga shuttered at that very thought... he supposed that he would have to use his own though, to be safe.

The final thing he needed was his own blood: the ultimate bond between spell and spirit. The blood contained the flavor of his life and his spirit... and he wasn't sure how much he needed... Kouga would have to return to that problem later, when he was about to perform the spell, as blood along with true intentions is what Kouga remembered activates the spell.

But, again... was it really worth risking? If he failed to do it properly, Kouga could end up permanently harmed in the least, perhaps even dead or suffering an even worse fate.

He had to... because he knew that in order to stay fighting he would definitely have to put on weight, and he couldn't remain alive after battle anyways withk such a light frame if his enemies kept on getting stronger and stronger at the rate they were already. What he needed was sturdy stability and substance to impose against his foes- overshadowing them all with his size and strength.

He would have to eat more, of course, but eating more just wasn't going to cut it if he was going to get to the size he wanted to be in a short amount of time... when he would encounter Naraku again.

Kouga smirked as he imagined himself much larger than he was now, standing on a short ledge, grinning brightly and cracking his knuckles, glaring down at a pathetic, cowering Inuyasha, enveloped in nothing but his pure shadow.

So... if this was the way he was aiming for, it was the way he was going to go. Kouga kicked dirt over the pattern. He would have to try again later... when he was ready...
