Howdy from up North! I am reviewing your piece as a part of "The Kiwi Review Challenge! - closed" 

I enjoyed this well written politically oriented piece. It puts a very human spin on what was an immensely political issue. You hook your reader with the intro paragraph and create an interest in this issue that crosses political and geographical boundaries.

Your choice to write this in the first person lends a strength and immediacy to the piece that heightens the personal, emotional connection with the reader.

The narrative voice is rich and lyrical, while remaining highly intelligent and self-aware.

The inclusion of historical information at the end of this piece is very appreciated, and was a thoughtful choice.
