Title: Three Miles Left to Regret

Author: Olivia Ferguson Author Icon

Type: Short story

Let me start by saying that I really liked this story. It was quiet and introspective, and the readers learned a lot about the main character without even realising. There are also a lot of questions you leave them with, and with that in mind, I hope that you will continue this tale because I am curious about the answers.

Those questions, of course, pertain to the main character and her story. Why is she going home, and where is she coming from? Why is she dreading it, what is she regretting? There doesn’t even seem to be a hint in the story, and ordinarily I wouldn’t question it as, despite the slight vagueness, the story does feel complete. It’s just that you said in the short description that you might want to take this further, and if you do, I think there is quite a lot you could write.

That said, I thought the story you have here was excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the main character’s thoughts and her interaction with the older woman sitting next to her. The conversation seemed to stir some unwelcome emotions which pushed her back into silence again, and I think readers will be able to recognise those feelings, when we are reminded of something we don’t want to think about. It gives the character depth because she clearly has some issues she needs to deal with, and the readers can only guess what they might be. Maybe she has found out that she only has a short time left to live, or she is going home to visit a relative who might die soon. Perhaps it was just that she feels she isn’t making the most of her own life, and her going home might have something to do with that. It doesn’t really matter, but despite the fact that she declared the woman’s statement a cliché, it clearly struck a chord and made her think, and the readers along with her. I thought that was nicely done, and I enjoyed reading this story.
