Title: My Entry- 908 words

Author: paul8488 Author Icon

Type: Short story

What I liked best about this story was how well it matched the narrator’s character. It was quiet, but deep. There are clearly secrets hidden inside, but they’re not really important and the story makes perfect sense even if the readers don’t get to find out. They will have some questions, naturally, but the answers are not essential to understanding this tale. The main character has some issues that make him dependent on a set routine, like how to dress, where to go, how to act. He goes to great length both in following the routine and in describing it, and it becomes clear just how important it is to him. Yet when the routine gets interrupted, and the readers, who know him quite well by now, expect him to react badly to this interruption, he finds that he can cope with it rather well.

The story begins and ends with the main character thinking about his clothes. At the beginning, he explains that clothes are not important to him. By the end he has changed his mind. I’m not suggesting that the events of the story are going to change his life, but sometimes something small like this can make an important difference, as it seems it has here. I thought the way you wrapped up the story and made it seemingly all about clothes was nicely done, and it worked well to show how he thought and how his mind worked.

The narrator spends most of the story talking about his routine. A smaller part is spent on describing the encounter with the girl, and it was interesting that he talked about her in the same fashion as he did everything else. There were no superfluous descriptions, no deep emotions, he simple reported the event in the same way as he talked about his work or the corner of the bar where he sat. It would have been out of character had he done anything else, and the real revelation about the impact the encounter had on him only happened later when he was back in his apartment, and again I thought that was very well done.

I enjoyed the read *Smile*
