Overall impression: This a powerful story of the harshness of life for a Polish family. The descriptions of life brings this story a good flavor. The scattered use of Polish words and names adds character to the story. The style is easy to read and it flows well.

Characterization: Bronisława is an interesting character and is well described. Her account is well done and carries the reader into the story from beginning to end. The other characters do not play as big a role but add to the story development.
