Title: Elevation

Author: BloodToTheQuill Author Icon

Type: Short story

I won't pretend that I fully understand this tale. Let me see what I can piece together: A soldier in a battle scene gets killed and finds himself in some kind of afterlife where he appears to be on his way to hell. I'm sure that doesn't sum up all of the tale, but it seems to be the essence of it. There is a scene at the beginning that is written in first person where the rest is written in third person - I wasn't sure of the significance of that.

The tale has a dreamlike quality which probably isn't surprising because the narrator/main character appears to be dead. He wanders along hallways, hearing voices and observing visions he had never seen before, trying to work out what is happening to him. It is a little confusing for the readers but at the same time there is something oddly fascinating to his journey.

There is very little that is concrete about this story and the readers learn almost nothing about the character they are joining on this trip, but what is important is the feeling it gives them as they read. The descriptions, while a little confusing at times, were fascinating and I could imagine the scene quite clearly. Despite having to admit that I'm not sure I really understand everything that happened here, I still found the story quite intriguing.
