Greetings, J.E. Allen!
You have knack for telling stories, and being the lover and writer of horror and dark things that I am, I thought this was really good.
You did a great job with the imagery of the Devil as he watched that vision in the fire. The reader can tell how lonely this poor 'lost soul' is, even if he is the Devil!
I also like that part about the Firemare and him going looking for his bride, only to wake up the next morning with those fish bones and realizing that it was just a dream inside of a dream.
Right?
Regardless, I love the descriptions, and the spelling and telling were great.
A couple of niggles:
'...would blacken with their bodies(,) choking out even a full moon’s light.'
'Speeding through the forest(,) the horse’s hooves...'
There's a few other places in here that could use a comma, but I think if you went back over this you could spot them.
Otherwise, bravo! And good luck in the contest, although after reading this I don't think you'll need too much! *Bigsmile*
