Yes, the fairy tales (and nursery rhymes) were often scary, and gave some sort of thrill.

You've covered the simple truth - they were scary, and you enjoyed them as a kid.

Maybe you'd like to delve more into it?
For example - are they meant to be a catharsis?
Are they meant to show kids that fears and bad situations can be overcome? (JK Rowling has said this in an interview about the dementors.)
A bit more of an analysis might be interesting.
