*PenB* First Impressions:

I saw your article featured in the "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (March 27, 2024) and was intrigued by the title so I thought I’d come and have a read, and I’m glad I did. Many people can probably relate to the issues you raised here - we have busy lives, we have better things to do, and who wants to waste their time tidying and cleaning when it just needs to be done again soon? I remember my stay-at-home-mum dusting all the furniture in every room every day. There could not possibly have been a speck of dust anywhere, and still, she did it. It was how she was brought up and how she brought me up. And for years, I was stressing when I came home from work and tried to do all the cleaning - in a flat that was spotless because I hadn’t been there all day.

I liked your shortcuts. If I may, I would like to add one of my own, or rather, one of my mother’s which I always found sensible (not like the thing about dusting every day, which was just silly): If you don’t have time to clean, at least make sure it’s tidy. If the place is tidy, no one thinks to look if it’s clean, but if the place is a mess, people will assume that it’s dirty even if it’s not. I don’t know why she told me that piece of wisdom because her place was always tidy and clean, but there you are.

The part about not doing housework at the weekend struck a chord with me. You work all week, and then you do the housework all weekend and don’t have time to enjoy yourself. And the part where you talked about your husband and children picking up after themselves because the cleaner was coming made me laugh. It reminded me of the first time I had a cleaning lady and spent hours the day before cleaning the house so I wouldn’t be embarrassed… Why do women have so many hang ups about this kind of thing?! Maybe it’s just me...

*PenG* Suggestions:

The article was very polished and I didn’t notice any errors, but I do have one tiny suggestions:

cluttered with clean and dirty clothes piles
That sentence read a little awkward to me. How about, ”with piles of clean and dirty clothes”?

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

You mentioned the stacks of paperbacks on the nightstand both read and to-be-read which I found interesting. That’s the only thing I never ‘tidy’ as such. Books are allowed to run wild in my house, and they tend to live wherever they were last read. So what if there is a pile of books in the corner, or some books on the sofa, and don’t even ask me about the nightstand. Books have a great life in my house, lol

Apologies for the ramble but I enjoyed the article and I particularly liked the bit of advice at the end!
