*PenB* First Impressions:

That was a very moving story. The main character came across as a very honourable man, and he took great care not only burying the dead soldiers but also carving their details on bits of wood, like a tombstone. The enemy then started to do the same when they retook the trench, and it was almost like an agreement between them, to treat the dead with respect, despite them never actually speaking to each other.

The details in this story were very well written and it was easy to imagine the scenes. There was a quiet resignation to the tone - while you talked about the gun fire and the battles, they weren’t the main focus of the tale and although one of the genres was Action/Adventure, you didn’t turn it into a Hollywood movie with huge explosions and heroics. Obviously I have no first hand experience of any of this but I can believe that you have captured the mood quite well.

*PenG* Suggestions:

It would be nice to imagine that this kind of thing actually happened during the war. In reality, by 1918 the feelings between the British and German soldiers were such that bodies were simply chucked over the side of the trench and left there, so it would probably work better to set the story a few years earlier - but then, the armistice wouldn’t work. Maybe the story could begin earlier (you did mention that he had been in the trenches for a couple of years) and you could show how the attitudes of the soldiers changed over the years. However, I realise you make no claim as to the historical accuracy of this story so feel free to ignore this.

I believe it’s “inured”.

“a while”, two words.

“transfixed”

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

The ending was well done, and the brief description suddenly made sense. I can’t begin to imagine what it must have felt like for those who survived the Great War to be on the brink of another war, and it was fitting to end the tale there. I’m glad I came across this story; I liked it.
