*PenB* First Impressions:

A very emotional story. For most of it, I didn’t guess the ending. It was only when the narrator said his name that I suddenly got it, and then at the end you confirmed it. It was nicely done, the way the narrator looked after the elderly gentleman, trying very hard to abide by the rules of the care facility and not mention anything about the man’s illness so he wouldn’t upset him, but trying to gently jog his memory by encouraging him to talk about his life. The part where he described those memories was heartbreaking - even things from years ago were disappearing from the man’s mind. It seemed like you were talking from experience here, and although the story wasn’t in the ‘personal’ genre, it wouldn’t surprise me if it was something you are familiar with. If not, you could certainly imagine it very well.

*PenG* Suggestions:

I couldn’t find a single thing wrong with this story. There weren’t any typos or other errors, and it was very well written.

*PenP* Final Thoughts:

Both characters came across very well. Their dialogue, hard as it was to read, was very realistic, all the way to the last sentence the narrator spoke to the closed door. There was enough setting to imagine the scene, but the main thing about this tale was the emotional impact. It left me feeling for a couple of fictional characters that are real enough, somewhere. It feels wrong to say that I enjoyed this story, but I did because it was so well written, and it makes me want to come back and read more in your portfolio.
