I retired from law enforcement after twenty-five years, so this story resonated with me in a big way. While I did not work in a jail or prison, I got to know a few people like Sparrow. For me, with my experience, this reads almost like an essay about prison, parole, and re-offending, but by using Sparrow as the vehilcle for the essay information. This is very well done. I think your descriptions, using Sparrow's inner dialogue, is spot on. I spoke to more than one offender who had only recently been released from prison, some after a long stint. On more than one occasion I've heard incarcerated men discuss the plight of being released from prison with little hope of succeeding. The establishment of Halfway Houses has helped these men to reacclimate themselves into a society that may have changed drastically, especially after a prolonged incarceration. I think this paragraph, Then what? Beg? For pennies? Spend it on cheap wine so as not to be so cold at night? Try every endless night to find some charity one-night flop house or a diner that would let a filthy, smelly guy like him sit all night? He cursed at memories. and the one before it, closely sums up the problem for these men. It's almost like they expect to fail, and many do. The condition you describe in this well-written piece is called being institutionalized. In my experience, an institutionalized man is very easy to control when confronted by the police. They are use to being told what, when, where and how to do something without much questioning. In prison, many of them learn about the carrot and the stick quickly. I hope my comments hasn't taken away from how much I enjoyed reading this short piece. It's well written, interesting, and I like the creative approach of using a man's inner dialogue to get information to the reader. Thank you for sharing your writing.
