![]() | Vampirism, of a kind ![]() A brief story of memory, and loss ![]() |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At first I wasn’t sure that I fully understood this story, but I enjoyed it for the pleasure of reading. The descriptions were exceptional, especially at the beginning. Lines like the one where the pigeons scattered at the touch of the wind worked really well to paint a beautiful picture, and the two characters fit perfectly in its serene setting. Jenna knows what Roger is planning, and she is enjoying every moment of it. The trip, the meal, the man who loves her - it all makes her very happy. And yet, there is a feeling of unease. She remembers something, but not quite - the details seem to escape her, which makes her feel more and more anxious. On the second read, I think I figured out that the whole first part is the memory, and Jenna, much older now, is fighting to hold on to it. It is more than simply slipping away; to her, it feels like it is being stolen from her, and she is desperately trying not to give it up. ![]() The story was well written and I didn’t notice any errors, and the only suggestion I have is to increase the font size a little. The WdC default is quite small and difficult to read on a screen. ![]() While the first part of the story was sweet and romantic, the second part was scary but very powerful. The way I read it, it is Jenna’s mind conjuring images of someone trying to steal the memories of her beloved Roger, and she is projecting those images onto the carer who is likely just looking after her. In her mind, he is a scary creature responsible for removing her memories like a vampire sucking blood. But the memory of this unsettling event soon fades as well, and she no longer recognises him, which is probably a good thing, even though it seems that she no longer remembers Roger either. I might be wrong - like I said, I wasn’t sure I totally got the story, but I found it very thought provoking and cleverly written. I enjoyed the read! ** Image ID #2154080 Unavailable ** ![]() ![]()
