Harry's Prairie [13+] One man's weed is another man's flower |
HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary Reviews" First Impressions: Communication is important! Had the two men just had a chat while they were working, like their wives, they could have easily avoided all of this. Harry could have shared his reasons for planting the ‘weeds’, and Fred would have known not to touch them. But as men are, they don’t really talk, and so Harry came home to an unpleasant surprise, while Fred was all pleased with himself because he thought he was helping. I wonder how they got on after this incident and if Harry and their friendship recovered from this. I have an alleyway behind my house and have for years tried to get some wildflowers to grow there, but to no avail. So I was quite jealous of Harry’s prairie, and I could imagine it very well from your descriptions. Like the narrator, I didn’t know what ‘xeric’ meant, but a quick trip to Google solved that problem (and it was really quite easy to figure out from the context, anyway). Suggestions: The story was well written and I didn’t notice any errors, but I do have one suggestion. You didn’t say that this was written for a contest but I assume it was because of the words in bold. I would suggest including a link to the contest at the end of the story - it might just be me but I’m always curious what inspired a tale and what the requirements were. Final Thoughts: It was a funny story but I felt for poor Harry at the end of this tale. He had put a lot of work into the garden and he had good reasons to design it like he did. To find it destroyed when he returned was a blow, but even more so because it wasn’t done by vandals but by a well-meaning friend. He was a great character and his personality came across very well. At least he had the birth of his grandchild as a consolation. Fred was also well drawn, and I could imagine him being mortified when he realised what he had done. The mention of the Kentucky bluegrass at the end made me chuckle because that was the very thing Harry hated the most, the one thing he would not want in his garden and had planned to get rid of. The title was well chosen, although I felt the description almost gave too much away and the ending wasn’t much of a surprise. A good story; I enjoyed the read!
