Letter from the editor

My sister is a nurse. I believe that it is fair to say that that has never been an easy profession, even at the best of times, but right now she and her colleagues are finding themselves under a great amount of pressure. All around the world there is uncertainty about what our future will hold. For some of us life has changed drastically over the last few weeks. In the Netherlands, where my family lives, schools have closed, people in non-essential professions are asked to work from home and there is talk of a nationwide lockdown. Here in the UK schools remain open, but it is advised to work from home if possible, and to avoid non-essential social contact. There has been talk of asking people over the age of 70 to self-isolate, possibly for months, which is not going down too well with the people I know who are over the age of 70, including my mother-in-law. She’s out and about every day, and would be lost without her social network. It’s not easy right now, for anyone. I’m sure that it’s not easy for you. If you are struggling, remember to reach out.

The Internet is not always the best place to be. I think that we all know of its downsides. It does, however, have its good sides, too, and when life gets tough you will often find that online communities become a source of strength and kindness. When natural disasters occur, for example, people on the Internet will gather together and hold fundraisers, share resources and offer valuable knowledge and support. During dangerous events I have seen wonderful people open up their homes to strangers in order to keep them safe. Now, as many of us face a loss of social contact, it is good to remember that you aren’t alone. We on Writing.Com may not be able to stop by for a cup of coffee or tea, but we’re gathered on the newsfeed, or you may find us in reviews, and if you need us all you need to do is reach out and say hi.

It helps to give the mind a rest from the constant stream of worrying news. Sure, it’s good to know what’s going on but too much of it can wear a person down and end up being counterproductive. As you’re a creative person – that’s how you ended up finding this site, after all – now is a good time to make use of that creativity. You can enter contests and activities, write in your blog, review the works of others, or perhaps think of a contest or activity of your own. It is important to look after your mental well-being and creative pursuits are an oft-recommended component of self-care.

If you are in a position to do so, you can also reach out to others who are struggling. For example, if there are people in your neighbourhood who are in preventative isolation, you may be able to help them walk their dog, or pick up a few items from the shop – following all safety measures and guidelines, of course. My mom is over the age of 60, and she has some health conditions which mean that the virus could be extremely dangerous to her, so she has had to stay indoors for three weeks thus far. It’s not easy for her. If you know someone in a similar position, some extra time spent chatting over the telephone can help.

If you are someone who prays, let’s pray that this virus is on its way out. Let’s pray for everyone’s health and well-being. Let’s pray that this worrying time will leave us a bit kinder than before, and more compassionate. I know that it has shown me how interconnected we are, here on this small planet, and how we each of us need to support the other. In the meanwhile, let’s ask for the strength to see this through as a good and caring human being rather than slip into panic and selfishness. It’s not always easy, I know. But we have to do the best that we can and be the best we can be.

I wish you and your family everything good. Remember that this, too, shall pass. And remember, we’re a community. We’re here for you.
