Short Shots

Writing.Com has an official contest each month. The prizes for entering are some of the hightest possible prizes on the site. The winners not only receive large gift point awards, they also receive contest-specific merit badges that can't be earned in any other way. But even if you're not making off with one of those prizes, you will still get three reviews from the judges panel.

In May 2020, you should give "Short Shots: Official WDC ContestOpen in new Window. a try. The prompt is an image. You have no genre restrictions and up to 2000 words to play with. The only limitation that you have is that your writing has to fit into the Writing.Com content rating of 18+ or below. You can let your imagination run as wild as you want to.

If the "official" nature of the contest makes you feel intimidated: Don't be. The judges are all members here, just like you.
Of course, since the prizes are substantial, you are asked to put your very best foot forward. Don't just hammer something out and send it in as a first draft. Even on the day that this newsletter gets published, you still have two weeks before the deadline. That means you can work on a first draft, ask for reviews and revise for well over ten days and still submit your entry before the deadline is even close.

Some of you might say that it's too hard to write 2000 words. Just in case you wondered: there is no rule that your entry has to have 2000 words exactly. If you feel that you've told the best story in 300 words, then you did it! Make sure those are the best 300 words for the prompt and let it fly. One last word to about those 2000 words though: That is a hard limit. If you send them 2024 words, your entry won't count. It will be disqualified.

In the editor's picks below, you will find past entries to Short Shots. Some won prizes, others didn't. All entered! You need to be one of those people that enters short story contests. You've got nothing to lose.
