Letter from the editor

"It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish."
-Spoken by Samwise Gamgee
-written by JRR Tolkien

Such truer words have never been spoken! How many times, have you, as a writer, procrastinated beginning a writing project? I'm guilty.

What excuses have you used? Fear? Laziness? Was it too gorgeous a day to "waste" it by writing? Did the thing growing in the back of the fridge need evicted that particular day? See how creative we can get when putting off something?

We are individual in how we see the world and in how we approach our work. Here are a few approaches that writer's utilize to get that pen or fingers on a keyboard moving.

Set a certain time each day to write. Some writers have a required number of hours they work. Others write until the well is exhausted for that day. Some of us just enjoy looking at a blank screen for a few hours.*Wink* Are you more creative in the morning, evening or late in the night? Use this to your advantage. Plan your writing time around your creative time.

Some writers challenge themselves with set word count each day. If you are new to this, start with, say five hundred words and work up from there. Don't, however, limit yourself. If you set a goal of five hundred, but still have more to say, then by all means continue writing!

My creative writing professor always stressed that the best way to get those words flowing is to apply "bum glue." Plant yourself in the chair where you tend to sit when writing and write!

Don't trouble yourself with grammar and spelling. You may worry about those things along with fine tuning in rewrites.

Whenever you feel the excuses coming on, use some of that creativity in your writing. That growing thing in the back of the fridge could be a great horror story! What you find in the bottom of the sock drawer may become a mystery.

Okay writers! Apply a generous amount of bum glue and start writing!
