If you've created your Portfolio and visited any of the forums designed to help new members navigate the site (such as "Noticing Newbies" , you know about the Bio-Block and Biography tab. Anyone who has read any of my previous Noticing Newbies newsletters know the importance I place on filling out these areas. They are your billboards, your place to advertise yourself to other members here.
Writers don't exist in a vacuum. We crave the support, praise, assistance, yes, even criticism of fellow writers. And WDC members are overwhelmingly writers. So let's discuss an important aspect of writing and a critical part of WDC--reviewing.
If you're like me you received your first review within days of joining. Some reviews are better than others; some reviewers are better than others.
How do you know who is a good reviewer? Better yet, how do you find a reviewer who best knows the genres in which you write? Let me ask one other question.
Did you know that members can post their reviewing philosophy in a specific area within their Portfolio?
A member's Bio-Block is on display when you open that person's Port. Their Biography--a more in-depth look at the member--is the third tab in their Port. Their Review profile is found in their second tab Reviews.
Clicking on the gear icon opens a series of windows allowing you to state your reviewing style, including what you consider important when penning a review, how in-depth you're willing to go in a review, even how often you give reviews. You can tell us what you're good at, such as character development, grammar, or punctuation, or that with which you're not comfortable. Or, you can state what genres or styles you'll NOT consider reviewing.
You can advertise your reviewing presence on WDC, and you can read other member's reviewing profiles. Find them by clicking on the Reviews tab of any member's Portfolio. Hopefully they've completed that area. If not, as a minimum you'll see the member's name and two lines:
Review Requests: This will either be set to ON or OFF indicating whether he or she will accept review requests from other members.
# of Public Reviews Given. Clicking on the number takes you to a list of all the public reviews given by the member. Read through some to see if their style interests you.
Which members are considered good reviewers? Clicking on the Reviewers tab in the Main Menu opens a window displaying recent reviews given by members. At the top are several links, including Most Credited Reviewers and Most Active Reviewers, among others. The Most Credited Reviewers are generally recognized as pretty good reviewers by the WDC Staff and general members.
Finally, I've noticed that not all members complete their Reviewing profile, even those on these lists. But many members who have been here for some time cite their reviewing style in a separate essay located in their Port. A little digging should uncover those important nuggets.
I encourage everyone who expects to review members to complete their reviewing profile.
Write (and Review) On!!

Check out these Newbies. Take a moment to review this offering ... or something else in their Port. Welcome them to WDC though a scribble in their Notebook.

From the newsfeed and mailbag:
From Bella Bond : Hello, I joined last December but did not delve into the site until about a week ago. There is a lot of activities to do here. What a great way to communicate in a writing community. I'm sorry I did not get involved sooner. I still have trouble trying to get the linking right. I think I only use one link and other things I read have a list of links. I keep going over and over the writing.com tools. Practice makes perfect, hopefully?
Writing for the internet is different, so is reading. With the internet you must shorten your information and get the point of what your writing in the first few sentences. Otherwise people won't read it. As I say, "Keep on writing and creating".
Linking practice makes perfect. Check out "Enhance Your Item With WritingML" from "Writing.Com 101" . I'm sure you'll be linking items with the best of us in n o time.
From hbk16: The spirit of initiative engenders innovation and creation that are both important elements to any success indeed.
Great issue!
Thanks for reading.
From WakeUpAndLive~doingNaNo'24 : By logging in daily. By being active within this writer's community. By actually paying for the GPS from now on, although I've reviewed my way through in the past few years. By caring for the well being of site and customers.
From rolandeld }: Logging on daily as an active member, reviewing as much as I can, and in tandem with my bestie, 🌑 Darleen - QoD , hosting events that foster a growing playground of creative poetry!
From Anna Marie Carlson : I support Writing.Com by sending Gift Points back. I log in every day. I also submit my stories for all to read. I have been supported by an anonymous donor twice and hope that he/she is pleased by how hard I am working.
From elephantsealer : I shall continue to support Writing.Com through the yearly upgrade of my account. As each year comes, I celebrate with Writing.Com for giving me the opportunity to write and to continue my support. God bless Writing.Com.
Thank you all for your continued support.
