Develop Your Own Style

Having your own individual style is very important - it is what sets apart your writing from your neighbours, even when given the same prompt to write about.

Developing your style in reviewing is also important. Each of us brings to the process our strengths. That is on the giving side - you give of your experience to the person whose item you are reviewing.

On the receiving side, your own weaknesses are improved as you learn from the positive aspects of the the item being reviewed.

It is a good idea to set up a template of your review. This could be as simple as a signature, or as complicated as a complete breakdown of every aspect of a piece you might comment on. Generally somewhere in the middle is a good place to aim. A complex breakdown of points you consider is probably best kept as a supporting static item in your own portfolio. This can be linked from your review.

For those with a Basic or above membership, the The ScaryMaster Author IconMail Icon and The StoryWitchress Author IconMail Icon have released a brand new feature - the Review Tool. If your membership level allows, I recommend you check it out, as it makes using reviewing templates a breeze. It is found at the bottom of every reviewable item - you just need to click the link. *Wink*

If you are on a Free Membership, you can still utilise the NotePad to store a review template, and simply copy and paste from there into the item you are reviewing. Yiour Notepad is found under the "My Places" drop-down menu.

For some ideas on different looks and approaches to reviews, take a perusal through a few pages of the Public Review pages. There you will see a number of individual treatments to the review process.

Above all - remember we are all individuals. You may be an atrocious speller, but you can still be a reviewer. Your ability to create real characters, or write natural dialogue is just as useful, just as important as somebody's ability to win a spelling bee.

Our weaknesses are never an excuse to not share our strengths with our fellow writers.

Thanks for reading.

THANK YOU so much for the newsletter!

Each day I return to WDC, I earn a new trick, or a new way of doing something. I look for the obscure writers, or the ones not seen before, and each visit puts a new pebble on the beach.

Hopefully, I can contribute better in future! The Knight Has Found Romance Author Icon

Great to hear you are taking an interest in and learning from the newer or lesser visited members of the site. There's certainly many writers to choose from that one never need be bored or run out of reading material. *Wink* As for your involvement, reading these authors is an awesome contribution! Do be sure to leave them a message with your thoughts on their item, though. *Bigsmile*

Hi Puditat Author Icon,
I really liked your idea of having a colorful story and then also having a copy all in black. I think that's really considerate for those who might be blinded by rainbow print or who have an old monitor that changes, let's say, light green into a dull brown. *Smile*
I enjoy subscribing to the Newbie newsletter because I am often reminded of the many tools at my disposal at WDC. Thanks for encouraging me and others to consider using more color in stories and reviews.
Best to you,
Tehanu

It is my pleasure, Tehanu. Writers are creative people, so why not be creative in our formats, and have a little fun. *Wink*

Great newsletter, Pudidat! I'm all for color (bet you never would have guessed that, huh?) *Laugh* I remember when I was a newbie and learned how to use the ML tags, I went NUTS! It was so much fun (and still is, hee-hee!). I'm sure this week's newsletter will prompt a higher percentage of colorful writing, too. Perhaps even a bit of colorful FeedBack, don't you think? *Wink*

Thank you, Cubby. I hope I faithfully rendered all of your feedback. *Laugh*

Tomorrow (4/28) is my one month anniversary on WDC and I am thrilled that I decided to register. I never would have guessed that it would have been so easy to get feedback on my writing and to make so many wonderful friends so quickly.

Cheers to all the WDC crew, authors, and newbies to come!

Ciao,
Pia
