Letter from the editor

It might seem that love and horror do not mix, but that isn't always the case. Love and fear are both basic emotions, and people often feel more than one emotion at the same time.

Loving something is often associated with the fear of losing it. For example, a loving spouse or parent might commit horrible deeds to make sure the person they love is safe.

Like any human feeling, love can have a twisted side. The dark side of love is obsession and attempts to control the object of the obsession.

Love is an important part of many classic horror stories including Phantom of the Opera, Dracula, and Frankenstein.

Many of Edgar Allan Poe's works feature the twisted side of love or the pain of lost love. Examples include Morella, Ligeia, Eleanora, and The Raven. Poe's mother and wife both died of tuberculosis, which may be the reason many of his works feature dying or sickly women.

Love and romance are a staple of classic Gothic stories, such as Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Most Gothic stories contain at least a touch of horror and fear, even those that are not categorized as horror stories.

Something to try: Write a horror story that is also a love story.
