That motley dramaâoh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
to the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.
~ excerpt from The Conqueror Worm by Edgar Allan Poe

You know what horror is and you know what poetry is, but what is horror poetry? You may even be one of those people who say, âHorror Poetry, thatâs a thing?â Yes, yes, it is. So what is horror poetry?
Well, imagine your basic types of poetry; rhyme, ballad, sonnet, free verse, etc. Poetry comes in many forms, from extremely short haiku to the epic. Poetry can rhyme or not, it can be literal or abstract, and it can encompass any subject matter. The horror genre is not off-limits. Poems by Edgar Allan Poe, such as âThe Ravenâ and âThe Conqueror Worm,â stand testament to this. A poem with horror at its center can be just as meaningful as a song with love as its focal point.
Horror poetry is just like any other type of poetry youâd write, only you're getting deeper, darker, and adding fear and sadness into it, more than you would with raw emotional type of poetry. Learning to write a horror poem can be a challenge and rewarding. With a little imagination, you can write one that might send chills along the spines of your readers.
The thing to know about horror poetry is that itâs like regular poetry and can be written in any way you wish, there are no rules. Poetry is whatever you want it to be, and this is how some horror writers who are also poets express themselves, by combining the two to create a piece of macabre written art to be read and enjoyed.
Horror poetry is a niche a writer/poet can truly make their own. They can be themselves and enjoy their horror at the same time. This is an obvious case of having your cake and eating it too. Horror Poetry may not be Paranormal Romance, Young Adult, or a boy wizard going through life entertaining tons of young readers, but it doesnât have to be, and no one is asking it to be. Horror poetry is a way of expression, a way to tell a horrific story in a delicate style; itâs showing the twisted side of poetry and all the things that make it great. |
