Letter from the editor

Maybe you’ve been reading or watching too many murder dramas. Or maybe your main character is a serial killer. Perhaps one of your characters has an itchy trigger finger. Whatever the reason, you want to know how a character can get away with murder. So, here are a few tips that you might be able to weave into your stories.

*Skull* DNA is the surest way to get caught!
Therefore, do not leave any DNA behind. Is the killer wearing gloves, hat. etc.? Perhaps the crime scene could be a place that is likely to have a lot of DNA present from many strangers. Another way to eliminate DNA is with oxygen-producing detergents, or by taking precautions with protective wear.

*Skull* RELATIONSHIPS
Very large numbers of crimes are committed by someone close to the victim. Investigators will always look to those closest to the victim first. Are the family and friends of your victims getting questioned? Therefore, if you want to prevent your murderer from getting caught, they should pick a victim at random.

*Skull* TYPES of CRIMES
Chose a crime carefully and one that can be committed at any time of day.
Most murders are committed in one of three ways: guns, stabbing, blunt objects. Other possibilities may include poisoning, bombing, crucifixion, etc. What kind of chaos are your characters up to?

*Skull* EVIDENCE
This is where most criminals get caught (linked to DNA).
Here are some tips to avoid your character from getting nabbed:

a. Do not take anything from the victim
b. Leave the victim at the murder scene and don’t touch it
c. Do not move or try to hide the body
d. Clean up the crime scene and wear protective gear (gloves, etc)

*Skull* ALIBI - Does our character have a good alibi?
A good, strong alibi is a good way to avoid or delay your character getting caught.

a. Plan an out-of-town trip and pay using a credit card
b. Stay at a motel/hotel without security cameras
c. Sign up for activities to attend
d. Don’t forget, cell phones can be traced

Just like in real life, there are no perfect crimes. People get caught sooner or later, but keeping the details of your story as realistic as possible will keep your readers engaged.
