About This Newsletter

To write fiction, one needs a whole series of inspirations about people in an actual environment, and then a whole lot of work on the basis of those inspirations.
-Aldous Huxley

I don’t believe that a writer ‘gets’ (takes into the head) an ‘idea’ (some sort of mental object) ‘from’ somewhere, and then turns it into words, and writes them on paper. At least in my experience, it doesn’t work that way. The stuff has to be transformed into oneself, it has to be composted, before it can grow into a story.
–Ursula le Guin

Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.
–John Steinbeck

A man who is not born with the novel-writing gift has a troublesome time of it when he tries to build a novel. I know this from experience. He has no clear idea of his story; in fact he has no story. He merely has some people in his mind, and an incident or two, also a locality, and he trusts he can plunge those people into those incidents with interesting results.
-Mark Twain

Letter from the editor

Hard Days Night

I don't like people telling me what to do. I guess that kind of makes me a prick, but I don't really care.

When I get in my 'head-space' and I'm churning out the words, DON'T, please don't, interrupt me. Writing a novel is hard, so don't tell me how easy it is. Don't tell me to 'take-a-break-and-come-back-to-it'. No!

It's hard to stay focused. I read, and then re-read. I edit on the fly. I write myself into a corner and can't continue. Anything to keep me from writing more and more. You gotta have more or it's not a novel.

This is not the first time I've made an attempt at writing the Big Kahuna. My past failures were brilliantly edited to death and presented as long short stories, or novellas, if you will. That's where "PossessionOpen in new Window. came from, and "The WatercourseOpen in new Window.. Another novel failure was "The Photograph of Carolina StumpOpen in new Window.. All great ideas that I just couldn't stretch-out.

What's left? Another short story.

I have enough short stories to fill 5 books!

Don't get me wrong. I love writing short stories and flash fiction. But sitting down and churning out a novel . . . It's hard for me.

Thank you so much for showcasing 3 of my items in your newsletter *Heart*
It's amazing, especially coming from you, who are a pillar of horror on WDC.

I am forced to point out that Mark Twain's comment about simplicity in language was appropriate only in his Victorian world of pomposity and flowery descriptions. To adhere to it now, when the language is being impoverished by the limitation of vocabulary to only the most basic and invariable expressions, is to make the same mistake as that of the generals in the Great War - fighting yesterday's battles.

Oh and thank you very much for including my story, The Excrescence, among your Editor's Picks.
