About This Newsletter

The thing under my bed waiting to grab my ankle isn't real. I know that, and I also know that if I'm careful to keep my foot under the covers, it will never be able to grab my ankle.
-Stephen King

The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown
-H. P. Lovecraft

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
-Frank Herbert

I have heard it said that as we keep our birthdays when we are alive, so the ghosts of dead people, who are not easy in their graves, keep the day they died upon.
-Charles Dickens

So Scary as to Cause Chills and Shudders

The world is scary, and sometimes things can be overwhelming. Here are some chilling passages from books I have read.

“They want us to be afraid.
They want us to be afraid of leaving our homes.
They want us to barricade our doors
and hide our children.
Their aim is to make us fear life itself!
They want us to hate.
They want us to hate 'the other'.
They want us to practice aggression
and perfect antagonism.
Their aim is to divide us all!
They want us to be inhuman.
They want us to throw out our kindness.
They want us to bury our love
and burn our hope.
Their aim is to take all our light!
They think their bricked walls
will separate us.
They think their damned bombs
will defeat us.
They are so ignorant they don’t understand
that my soul and your soul are old friends.
They are so ignorant they don’t understand
that when they cut you I bleed.
They are so ignorant they don’t understand
that we will never be afraid,
we will never hate
and we will never be silent
for life is ours!”
― Kamand Kojouri

“Stare at the dark too long and you will eventually see what isn’t there.”
― Cameron Jace, Snow White Sorrow

“So what, ghosts can't hurt you. That's what I thought then.”
― Stephen King, Bag of Bones

“The dead weren’t scary. It was the living you had to watch out for.”
― Eileen Wilks, Mortal Ties

“You think I am beautiful? Come with me, for your life is done. You think I am not? Then breathe your last, for it’s over.”
― Keran Pantth Joshi, CHECK-IN CHECKOUT

“If that doesn't scare you away. My Alien friends will abduct you, then probe you, just for the fun of it.”
― James Hauenstein

His breath stopped in a gasp. An almost drowsy terror stole through his veins. Yes. Yes. There was something in here with him, some awful thing the Overlook had saved for just such a chance as this. Maybe a huge spider that had burrowed down under the dead leaves, or a rat... or maybe the corpse of some little kid that had died here on the playground. Had that ever happened? At the far end of the concrete ring, Danny heard the stealthy crackle of dead leaves, as something came for him on its hands and knees.
-Stephen King, The Shining

Cujo got back up. His muzzle was bloody. His eyes seemed wandering, vacuous again. Inside the house the phone rang on and on. The dog made as if to walk away, suddenly snapped viciously at its own flank as if stung, whirled, and sprang at Donna's window. It struck right in front of Donna's face with another tremendous dull thud. Blood sprayed across the glass, and a long silver crack appeared. Tad shrieked and clapped his hands to his face, pulling his cheeks down, harrowing them with his fingernails.
-Stephen King, Cujo

A hand closed around Eddie's foot...The soft yet strong grip startled him so much that he almost lost his balance and tumbled into the canal. It's one of the queers the big kids are always talking about, he thought, and then he looked down. His mouth dropped open. Urine spilled hotly down his legs and stained his jeans black in the moonlight. It wasn't a queer. It was Dorsey. It was Dorsey as he had been buried, Dorsey in his blue blazer and gray pants, only now the blazer was in muddy tatters, Dorsey's shirt was yellow rags, Dorsey's pants clung wetly to legs as thin as broomsticks. And Dorsey's head was horribly slumped, as if it had been caved in at the back and consequently pushed up in the front. Dorsey was grinning.
-Stephen King, It

DEAD LETTERS

Can FEAR keep you alive?

Marvelous Friend Author Icon
Fear keeps us anxious and stressed. Too much of that leads to death. That is my opinion.

Write_Mikey_Write! Author Icon
As long as that rush of adrenaline activates the correct fight-or-flight element, I would agree. Whether or not it keeps you alive, fear certainly lets you know you are alive.

Kåre เลียม Enga Author Icon
Fearless = you die young.
Fearful = you wished you would've died young.

Yes. Fear is vital. Not afraid of that spider with the red splotch on its back? You will die. Not afraid of that very large cat with the teeth that can outrun you and looks hungry? You die. Not afraid of the burny hot thing that sets your kitchen alight? You die. Fear is our response to things that can hurt us. It is a valid evolutionary thing in the brains of even base creatures. It's there for a reason. So we don't get burnt to death when fat fires get out of control in our kitchens. Or that could just be me...

bryanmchunter
I feel quite the opposite. Some people have ended their lives just to escape fear.
(I strongly advise you NOT do do this.)

Scifiwizard Retired Author Icon
Yes, fear makes us aware of possible dangers. Everyone feels fear it is just that some deal with the emotion better than others.
I dealt with fear too much in my life. I don't do fear at all anymore

Paperface Author Icon
Fear, when it is working as an instinct for survival, will keep you alive. But also, at the same time, it keeps you in the dark and ineffective.
If you wish to stay alive, while being effective and wish to get things done, you courage AND hope.
Courage to try out doing different things, which you are unsure about. And even if things do go south, you still keep on hanging onto the hope, get back onto your feet and try again.
So in other words, while fear works as an survival instinct, it really doesn't keep you 'alive'.
Fear only leads you into the dark, which leads you into being ineffective, which then leads into suffering and despair.
What you really need, is hope, to keep yourself alive.
Sometimes it is a little harder, to see the light in the darkness, but it will always be there.

elephantsealer Author Icon
I am not sure that "fear" does keep us alive. When I am afraid, all I want to do is "die"... or rather completely disappear.

Mikel Bardsdale Author Icon
Fear could be why women last longer.

Since the beginning, fear has k*lled us-
Man wasn't created to be in fear, but in LOVE, peace, and of sound mind. Fear was a result of the fall. God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day in the garden until faith and love was reversed into fear. They had enough FAITH to walk with God, cause obviously they walked with Him without KNOWING Him well...They trusted God. THATS what Satan attacked, besides making them dissatisfied with perfection. Eve got the command second hand from Adam, and she misquoted what God said...And the thief jumped on it like a duck on a june bug. Satan KNEW she aint know- It annoys me when folks try to say its cause she was a woman...The thief dont care- The thief comes to k*ll, steal, and destroy: Fear k*lls faith/hope/love, steals peace/joy/confidence, which results in destroying physical/emotional/relational health. FEAR is the root of alot of stuff that folks aint pay mind to: If folks would take heed, FEAR destroys marriages if yall dig deep enough- Its also a scientific fact fear breaks down physical health...Shame, anxiety, low self esteem- insecurities, worry, lack of trust, self centeredness, greed, hate, etc are ALL the fruit of the root of fear. The fruit is just whats seen from the root. I would say its amazing science just restates whats in the bible, but I digress...
Its fine to be AWARE of things and be concerned, but fear only got one purpose. De@th.

Save the Turkeys! Author Icon
I don't think everyday fear is live or die, for the most part. I don't fear getting hit by a car because I am walking down the road unless I see I am going to possibly get hit. I may worry about it and take precautions, but it isn't fear.
Looking back at my earliest imagined memories, I believe gravity (or not hearing that second heartbeat!) is the first real cause of fear, then sudden changes would spark fear. But for humans, fear is not live or die until someone starts telling stories!
To answer the question as I see it, yes, fear can keep some of us alive a bit longer, at least.

Well, the funny thing about fear is, sometimes fear can kill you. This is done by having too much adrenalin in your system, causing you to have a heart attack. Sometimes that fear is ruled by ignorance or the unknown (an example is the pandemic of today). Fear can also keep you alive, giving you just enough adrenalin, (power) to get you out of danger. But one cannot live in fear. It will cause you to have, an early death.

TheBusmanPoet Author Icon
Courage is where fear comes from. Fear is a good thing as long as you don't allow it to overwhelm and control your life.

Dragonfly Author Icon
Especially when you read nonsense ranting of a religious fanatic, keeps me afraid.

Bob Author Icon
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (I get that because it makes perfect sense for we should have great respect for anyone bigger or more powerful than we are.)
Since the great fall every creature operates on fear. It's the fight or flight syndrome.
Bible says 'perfect love casts out all fear.' (I haven't figured that one out yet.)
If a great white is circling me loving it may not keep it from eating me unless there is divine intervention. I've had some divine intervention during times of duress (heart attack ect.) but I think that's his love for me.
