Gender in hermetics does not refer to the physical sex or a person’s male or female reproductive organs. It is a reference to gender polarities within nature, science, and the human which work together in balance, similar to the yin and yang, the union of opposites.
In chemical affinity within chemistry, for example, dissimilar chemical species are capable of forming new chemical compounds. For instance, a battery is made up of a union of positive and negative compounds in order to create electricity to power objects.
In botony, there is also a union of opposites in order for fruit to grow. In most cases, you must plant two different or sometimes three variants of apple trees near one another in order for the trees to eventually mature to providing fruit. Otherwise you'll just have a nice tree which never bears any fruit.
Everything possesses both masculine and feminine energy. In the human, the feminine aspects refers to creativity, spontaneity, feeling and imagination. Masculine refers to the will and action. Without the feminine aspect of self the masculine is apt to act without restraint, order, or reason, resulting in chaos . Without the masculine aspect of self, we'd be full of ideas, yet stagnant. When both masculine and feminine work together, we see thoughtful action, the power of the will and vision, combined with the creative force and careful thought to bring it into manifestation.
We've all met someone who is intelligent and full of ideas, which never come to fruition because they let their own emotions of fear of failure hinder then from even beginning those first steps forward. Then there's the individual who is always trying, yet seems to have no compass with life, so their life ends up being more chaotic. A hermetic would say both these people are unbalanced, the first allowing the feminine within self overpower the masculine, and the second allowing the masculine to overpower the feminine within self.
The objective for those of us who practice hermetics is to balance these aspects within ourselves. Only then can we achieve greatness.
From the hermetic viewpoint are you balanced? Why or why not?
