Letter from the editor

Bones, especially human bones, always have a creepy quality to them. There is something especially sinister about what was once the framework of a living body laid bare for all to see. A human skull, with its empty eye sockets and perpetual leer is the empty framework that once held the thoughts, hopes, and wisdom of a living person.

Under the right conditions, bones will remain long after the rest of the body has disintegrated. Bones of creatures that once walked the earth have been preserved in rock to tell us their story millions of years later.

There is something both frightening and humorous about the image of an animated skeleton moving about. One of my favorite old cartoons involves a group of dancing skeletons in a graveyard. Death itself is often personified as a cloaked skeleton carrying a scythe.

One legend involving a skeleton is based on a real person, Donna Ines De Castro of Portugal. In the fourteenth century, Prince Pedro, the heir to the throne of Portugal, fell in love with the Donna Ines, who was his wife's lady in waiting. The two of them carried on a secret love affair for years and had children together. After the death of his wife, Prince Pedro and Donna Ines began living together as if they were husband and wife. The king and many influential members of the court did not approve of the relationship and had Donna Ines put to death. Prince Pedro was heartbroken and furious about the murder of his lover. After his father died and he became king, he had her murderers killed. The legends say that he also raised Donna Ines's skeleton from her grave and dressed it in royal robes and a crown. He placed his lover's skeleton on a throne and demanded that the entire court bow down to her.

Something to try: Write a horror story that includes a skeleton.
