About This Newsletter

Noticing Newbies Newsletter is geared to help members get acquainted with Writing.com. There are many things to do and learn...and all the features can be overwhelming! Our goal is to help you make your time here more fun and manageable.

Each week we select and showcase new items (poetry, short stories, essays, campfires, polls, etc.). Exposure for an item (your writing) helps to bring you more rates and reviews by fellow members and the general public...of course depending on how much exposure you want your item to have. Some writers like to keep their work private. When your work does receive exposure, it also helps bring more member interaction, which will give you the opportunity to build new friendships. Remember, it is a two-way street, so try to make an effort to reciprocate reviews.

"There's someone that you haven't already met, go introduce yourself to him or her. Walls and labels can't keep you from the people who are so similar to you in spirit. There's a friendly face behind every door if you pick the right moment to knock. Once you start your wave of creative outreach, it turns into a contagious force. People are waking up and smiling at each other, sharing their dreams without hesitation. This community is worth something."

Letter from the editor

The title is....! It better be a good title, because first impressions can make or break the sale of your book...when it's good, it can sell thousands more copies than a mediocre one. There is fierce competition in the writing world, so you need to step up to the plate and make sure you get an edge on the market.

When I walk into a book store, I usually always first go to the New Release section and browse each row looking for that witty or unique title that stands out from the rest. Reality is, certain titles take precedence over others, so you need to do your homework and be educated on marketing skills, what works and what doesn't work.

If you have a difficult time choosing a title for your story or poem, don't panic. A title can come to you when you least expect it...the title can actually be the idea of your story. You may find the title within the content of your work or not until it's finished.

To help your muse get creative, listen to your favorite music or go for a walk. Make a list of title ideas in a notebook or create a title folder on your computer. I know that whenever I'm on a road trip to somewhere and I'm listening to the radio, I always come up with story ideas, titles, etc. and write on scraps of paper or post-its. So, whatever works for you, do it!

All too often a weak or inappropriate title prevents a book from being noticed by its intended audience.

Thanks for the contest listing and the words of warning. There were some tricks you brought up I wasn't aware of. It is so sad the number of people who are willing to take advantage of the hopeful and naive.

Great NL and links to all those contests! I've been looking for contests to give me some direction and discipline in writing at least every other day, and it's great to see all the links here .

I'm going to be busy surfing each and every one and hopefully, I'm able to find something to enter. Thanks a lot!
