Letter from the editor

Fear is an emotion caused by the feeling that someone or something is dangerous. It is a natural response to a real or perceived threat.

Fear helps us survive because it causes us to avoid dangerous situations.

Some experts believe that humans and animals have some inborn fears of things that were threats to their primitive ancestors, such as snakes, spiders, heights, or water. Some baby birds seem to be afraid of a stick painted like a coral snake even if they have never seen a snake. While the existence of inborn fears is difficult to verify, primitive humans and animals who avoided these dangerous situations were more likely to survive and have offspring.

We may fear or learn to avoid certain situations due to a negative experience in the past. For example, a person who has a near drowning experience might fear the water from then on.

Physiological responses to fear in humans include increased heart rate, faster breathing, sweating, constriction of peripheral blood vessels, piloerection (hair standing on end or goosebumps), and alertness which can lead to sleep disorders if it continues for a long time. These responses are all part of the "fight or flight" response, which prepares the individual to either run away and escape or stay and fight.

An exaggerated or irrational fear is called a phobia. A person who suffers from a phobia may react in a way that is out of proportion to the actual threat.

Something to try: Write a horror story in which a character overcomes a strong fear.
