This newsletter is a switch from the trek we were on for the past two newsletters with mystery writers from the Orient occupying our curious minds. However, this newsletter will not bore you, I think, though we're leaving the Orient to travel to mystery writing from Iceland grand master writer, Arnaldur Indridason.
Now, just how did I get my eyes from Asia to Iceland? Easy. I am a fan of Nordic authors and decided to discuss for the first in a line of writers spotlights, the crime fiction writing of Arnaldur Indridason. Believe me, you will not be disappointed this month, gentle readers! |

This month, I found myself "dry" for content from the Orient, not for lack of writing but for my lack of ability to find writing that was translated into English proper. While I mulled this over, and watch the time fly by me, an Icelandic author appeared in my Amazon ad. I saw "Jar City" from Arnaldur Indridason and the title had me hooked but the story itself, wow, great, great, storyline and strong storytelling floored me completely. I had to writer about Icelandic mystery writers, though they call it "Crime Fiction" and share with the group for this month.
So, where did this author come from and just what type of writing is "Icelandic" crime fiction? Well, Arnaldur Indridason was born January 28, 1961 in Reykjavík, the country's largest city. He was the son of an Icelandic writer but his father did not write the type of literature that his son wrote. Arnaldur Indridason went to University of Iceland, graduating with a bachelor's degree in history in 1996. He worked as a journalist for Morgunblaðið, Iceland's most popular website from 1981 - 1982. He later was a film critic for the same publication, Morgunblaðið, 1986-2001.
Now, we move on to the good stuff, like when did he start writing books? Arnaldur Indridason wrote his first book, "Sons of Earth", which is the first book in his Detective Erlendur series. The first two books, "Sons of Earth" and "Silent Kill" have yet to be translated into English so there will be a gap in following the series, should you want to dig in a read them but we just have to keep on looking for them. Arnaldur Indridason delved very deeply into his character, and went to Detective Erlender's past to write three more books about the painful truths and hurts that this man dealt with in his life and career.
Here are a few of his best selling novels - "Jar City", "Silence of the Grave" among others.
Arnaldur Indridason has received many awards for his books through the years. Arnaldur received the Glass Key award, a literature prize for the best Nordic crime novel, in 2002 and 2003. Then, in 2005 he won the Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger award for Silence of the Grave. Lastly, he won the world's most lucrative crime fiction award, the RBA Prize for Crime Writing worth €125,000, in 2013 for his story, "Shadow Alley."
Arnaldur Indridason is an author unlike many others. He is patient, careful, logical, deeply contemplative writer in a country where this form of writing is not considered highly at all. He has become a roaring success in the face of a stream of disapproving residents who only see non fiction writing or poetry writing or any other form of non fictional sort of writing the only type of writing a person who is logical should indulge themselves in. This is a country where crime is nearly non existent and where 1 in every 50,000 Icelanders are producing Icelandic crime fiction, which seems to go against their beliefs, it seems.
Here's hoping you explore more of this fantastic Icelandic author's works for your reading pleasure. |
