Letter from the editor

Christmas mysteries are a great way to get into the holiday spirit for lovers of detective and crime stories. Whether you are writing or reading... mysteries set around holidays can be very appealing to readers. So, I suppose the next question is how to pull it off! Frankly, the same way you write any other mystery but by tweaking the setting.

*Santahat* The Setting:

The setting can be incredibly important to the story and readers alike. A lot of what is specific to any crime depends on the setting.
Some mysteries start with murder; a body is found in a specific location.

*CandyCaneR* Holiday Twist - the victim is found in their recliner, beside the twinkling Christmas Tree. Snow is softly falling while a steady fire glows in the fireplace.

*Santahat* The Detective:

The detective is often intertwined with the setting in some way. It can be difficult to separate them as both play crucial roles in the story.

*CandyCaneR* Holiday Twist: The detective is called to the case right before guests arrive for Christmas Eve (or Chanukkah) dinner.

*Santahat* The Clues:

As a writer, the author is the murderer in the story, so to speak. Therefore, it's up to the writer to drop or hide clues.

*CandyCaneR* Holiday Twist: The murder weapon is found, beautifully wrapped, under the tree. The only way it could get there would be for the killer to wrap it before leaving the scene - but why? Perhaps the victim has been bashed in the head with Bubbe's antique menorah.

*Santahat* The Emotions:

I mean, we're talking about the holidays - there's going to be all kinds of emotions swirling anyway!

*CandyCaneR* Holiday Twist: talk about the trauma this will cause to the survivors losing their loved one during the holidays. Of course, the detective now has to work through the holiday and that can cause some tension on the home front.

In the end, you have to write the story in your own special way. What’s important is that the story contains the aforementioned elements and that the story ends in a satisfying way.
