Letter from the editor

Here are a few steps to consider before you get started!

*Crayons* Clarify your purpose
Do you want to write a story or a book? The first thing you need to consider is your purpose. What is it that you want to share? What is the goal? Think about why you are writing and who your target readers are.

If you only follow one nonfiction writing tip, follow the one that suggests you know your target audience.

*Crayons* Consider some different ideas
Think about what your passions are and then think about what information you can share. Do you have broad knowledge in a specific area that you'd like to share with a bigger audience? Perhaps writing, health and wellness, business, finance, relationships, etc.

*Crayons* Research
Regardless of your depth of knowledge in a subject, don't underestimate the power of research! There's always more to learn and can only serve to strengthen your overall piece. Research should be used to confirm and validate, not necessarily as a starting point for you to start writing.

*Crayons* Star with an Outline (Don't shoot the messenger!)
Beginning with an outline can make sure the structure of the information holds up. Sorting this out first will allow you to be sure of the order before you start working on transitioning between your ideas.

*Crayons* Start writing!
Write the first draft all the way through without editing as you go. For some of us, that can be difficult, I know. The idea of 'write-first-edit-later' may make it easier to get motivated, and stay motivated, with writing in the first place.
