Stale Jargon
Jargon is words used in certain industries that moved into a sort of mainstream use. Now, like certain slang phrases, have become stale and feel awkward in writing. Here are a few I found:
Ah-ha - someone caught a clue, now let's move on.
Bandwidth - yep, we have better decriptions
Info Dump - use 'in depth'
Impact - your bowels get impacted, not your bottom line (I feel like there's a pun there)
Offline - so overused it's shiny and worn
Out-of-pocket - just say unavailable
WFR'd or RIF'd - you lost your job
Obviously, certain professions or industries have their own jargon on methods or job roles but try to not be so obscure that common folks wouldn't understand. A plumber knows what a flapper is, I would think it's a dress style. Not the same, though. If you need to use a certain term, try to give it enough context for the reader to figure it out.
As always, Write On!

This month's question: What "fuzzwords" do you see or dislike? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!?
Last month's "Short Stories Newsletter (June 21, 2023)" question: What is your snack choice? Is it healthy?
Pumpkin Spice Sox : Chocolate is unfortunately my snack of choice. Though I prefer it dark and it can take a whole afternoon for me to melt a chocolate bar away in my mouth.
NaNoNette : My favorite snack is a trail mix. I prefer the kind that is sweetened with dried berries, but I will eat the kind with M&Ms in it too.
Staying hydrated isn't a problem for me. I always have a water bottle handy wherever I go, including when I sit down to write. I still take that afternoon caffeine jolt though.
A E Willcox : Yup. My snack of choice is not to have one
J.R. Lawrence : Reeses, even though they aren't healthy, who can't deny a good blend of choc. and PB? I can't.
Nobody’s Home : I try to drink fizzy water to pretend I don't want a snack. It usually gets me through to late afternoon. Pantry's usually empty, so I have a bowl of cereal (boring flakes) with frozen wild blueberries in it to hold me over until dinner. I'd rather eat sugar with a spoon, but you know.
Serena Blade : chips, and no. ...
TheBusmanPoet : Anything chocolate and no it's not healthy. Especially for a diabetic but anything that's done and done in moderation, will not hurt you.
Leslie Loo : Lays chips (unhealthy), popcorn (semi healthy), and nuts (healthy)
bryanmchunter: Goldfish crackers. I'm not exactly how nutritious they are, but they are a good source of fiber.
Bob : Pie, I love all kinds of pie. I never met a pie I wouldn't eat. An occasional piece of Lemon Meringue satisfies my desire for snacks. Other wise I wait until the Holiday season to really gratify my lust for pie.
tj-turkey-jobble-jobble-hard-J : I do not think anyone should use the terms snack and healthy in the same sentence~
With that said, I like to snack on popcorn with lots of butter, cheese/sausage on crackers, mixed nuts (salted), and of course, ice cream.
I like plenty of other snacks but try and limit myself to the ones that tend to be less unhealthy.
dragonwoman : a minimal amount of unsalted nuts.
Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥ : Peanuts in its shell, pistachios in its shell, nuts in general when I don't have them in a shell. Healthy in moderation.
Shadow Prowler-Spreading Love : I guess I've got to be the weirdo of the group. Some of my favorite snacks are baby carrots and/or celery with peanut butter. Half a peanut butter sandwich, sugar free pop cycles, chilled apple slices, cheddar cheese cubes, and sometimes an unsweetened bottle of cranberry juice is good. Now, those are my healthy options. We won't discuss the not so healthy things lurking in my pantry🙄
N.A Miller : apple slices and bananas
Angelica Weatherby- Grateful28 : Grapes (healthy) Reeses (unhealthy)
Fernando : Chocolate chip cookies, sour gummy worms, or sun chips regular flavor. Nope not healthy at all.
Mouse says gobble gobble : Most of the time my snacks are healthy as I like to munch on fruits like grapes and berries. I have to admit though that I do get that craving for chocolate every now and again.
s : I don't snack when I write... but I go through do many cups of tea, bottles of water and cans of energy drink!
NaNotatoGo! : Chocolate is in a tie with watermelon not sure how healthy either choice is.
elephantsealer : Whenever I decide to snack, I know it is healthy because I only eat what I really love to eat.....
Thanks to everyone for your delicious responses! Leger~
