Birthday!
In mere days, our community is going to be celebrating our 23rd birthday. Can you believe it? Back when I joined in 2004, I couldn't imagine still being part of this community after so many years. But the bug was caught and I'm still here, hanging out like a bat in the belfry.
I can safely say I have learned so much about our craft and made many friends along the way. Some of them I had the privilege of meeting in person at WDC Conventions. All of this is certainly something to celebrate.
Not only are we going to get lots of cool gifts and prizes throughout the birthday week, but hopefully you will join in the fun and meet new friends, connect with some really great contest hosts and win some prizes. Be sure to check in EVERY DAY, the fun happens each day and you get extra points just for logging in. There will be a link to Birthday Central in the upper left of the site pages, click it and check out everything BIRTHDAY and more.
It's the perfect time to stretch your wings and write something outside your comfort zone. There are lots of opportunities even when birthday week is over. Give it a try!
Always, Write On!

In honor of this great milestone, the Senior Mods have returned to give you a taste of that game we all know and love...MONOPOLY!...with a twist! *Bigsmile* Here's our Writing.com version, which is much easier and less likely to have you broke or tossing the board in anger because...well...some people just are too greedy (and the banker is almost never your friend) *shakes fists*
Excerpt: And that's your challenge: following the picture prompt below, write the most engaging opening line(s). You have full artistic license to take the picture prompt in any direction your muse takes you. Any genre, any style, anywhere your creativity takes you. Just make it the best!
Excerpt: How about Blogging in the week of WdC’s Twenty-Third Birthday? I will provide a prompt every day from September 1 till September 7 (WdC time). You make it a daily entry for seven days. Simple as that!
Big prizes during birthday week!
Excerpt: The game: I will tag someone to take part in the Writing.Com site birthday activities. Once they have completed a (small) task, they will toss the Hot Potato to someone else. That next person will do a task and nominate the next one.
Excerpt: The objective: create the most spectacular, unique birthday inspired trinket
content inside trinket may include (but is not limited) to quotes, poems, short stories, facts, trivia, links, photos, etc. extra credit will be given to birthday PLUS WDC inspired content.
Excerpt: The Prep is a month-long, community-oriented challenge that takes place every October, designed to help you plan a novel prior to writing it. The Prep was created to coincide with NaNoWriMo, but it can be used to prep any novel project. You don't even have to have a novel idea to participate! Your first assignment, on Oct. 1st, is to come up with an idea, and we provide you with brainstorming tools, plot generators, and a whole community of other novelists to help you along.
Excerpt: Whatever you write must involve the number 23 in some way. 23 words or 23 lines or 23 sentences or 23 paragraphs. Even 23 repetitions of the word exogenous works.
Excerpt: If you enjoy celebrating things, this forum is for you! We celebrate member’s Anniversary’s year round in this forum by sending them a review during their Anniversary month! Help members celebrate another year of membership by sending them Anniversary Reviews.

This month's question: Have you written something for a contest that ended up being very special? Send in your answer below! Editors love feedback!
Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (August 2, 2023)" question: Do you use bid-click to promote your items? Do you feel it helps?
Find bid-click info in "Writing.Com 101" - "BidClick System: Sponsored Items, Links & Genres"
NaNoNette : I have never used bid-click to promote my items, so I can't tell if it makes a difference. Every month, I am on the lookout to find contests or activities to feature in "The Simple Fundraiser " to help them out with gift points. I wish more people would use "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" and "Activities @ Writing.Com" to advertise what they offer. Too many rely on the newsfeed too much and things travel off the page and then they are gone.
bryanmchunter: I don't even know what bid-click is.
TheBusmanPoet : Never heard of it either.
Nobody’s Home : I'd like to hear from someone who does use it. I read about bid-click when I joined WdC and all of the site info popped into my email box. If you don't know what it is, I'll bet you can learn about it in this newsletter, since that's where this question is coming from. It's also likely covered in "Writing.Com 101" .
Mousewitch : It uses up gps too fast in my opinion. at least that has been the case when I used it in the past....
Max Griffin 🏳️🌈 : I use it to promote a contest
and my review site
I don't think anyone would find either one w/o the click-bid system.
N.A Miller : nope willing to learn though...
Vincent Woolridge : I don't know what bid-click is or what items are being promoted.
Dave Ryan : I did for my memoir (until the powers-that-be changed the intro rating from E to non-E for my use of a banned word in the title, meaning it was no longer eligible ). I can't say I noticed it making much of a difference to the number of views it received. As a reader, it very rarely occurs to me to check out the sponsored lists and so, based on that admittedly limited experience, I don't really think it's worth it.
Happy to write : I don't know what that is please explain.
NaNotatoGo! : Fair to say a lot of us, including me, don’t know about bid-click. Can we please get some enlightenment?
elephantsealer : What are "bid-clicks", anyway????????
Max Griffin 🏳️🌈 : Bid-clicks are a way to promote your items on Writing.COM. You spend GPS to have your item rotate through various places on the site like the "sponsored items" in the lower right-corner.
Click My Account/My BidClick Bids in the left navigation menu to visit your BidClick page and promote your items within the community. Once there, you set the amount you're willing to pay in GPS everytime someone clicks on your page in the relevant advertising area--contests, sponsored area, etc. How frequently your item appears in the rotation is determined by the amount you pay per click.
There's more information in Writing.Com 101--see the top menu for a link to that resource. Almost all your questions about the site can be answered there.
