Quote for the week:

Doors have eyes.
Trees have voices.
Beasts tell lies.

Letter from the editor

A cryptid is an animal that many people claim exists, but there is no scientific proof of its existence. Well known examples of cryptids include sasquatch (bigfoot,) yeti (abominable snowman,) the Loch Ness monster, the mothman, and the Jersey devil.

Every area of the world has its own cryptid legends. The hidebehind of Minnesota gets its name because it always hides behind a tree and is never seen. The bunyip of Australia lurks in swamps and is said to look like a feathered seal with legs. The dingonek of Kenya is said to be fourteen feet long with the head of a leopard, tusks of a walrus, scales of an armadillo, and claws of a lizard. You probably know of other legends that are unique to the area where you live.

Whether you believe these strange creatures exist or not, they are great subjects for horror stories. The unknown is always a good subject for horror, and many scary legends already surround these creatures.

You can make up your own cryptid legend for your story or use one of the many legends already in existence. If you use an existing legend, do some research on what is already believed about the creature, but you can also develop your own explanation for it. Maybe it is a human under a curse, an alien, or a creature from another dimension or time. Maybe it is a hoax set up by humans to cover up other nefarious activity. If your story includes one of the well known cryptids such as bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster, try to use it in an original way.

Something to try: Write a horror story that includes a cryptid.
