Letter from the editor

Well, this is it. I have officially written for the Contests & Activities newsletter on Writing.Com for a year. This issue celebrates my 12th monthly issue. What can we do to celebrate? How about a year's worth of activities? Or maybe a special newsletter-reader-only contest? How about both!

I figured I would feature my all-time favorite contests and activities. Yes, that's right! All of the activities and contests I'm about to share have a permanent spot in my favorite places list.

*Star* I know I've plugged this contest before, multiple times, but it is one of my absolute favorites for a quick write. It has helped fuel my creative fire since I joined Writing.Com 4 years ago! (Seriously. My 4th portfolio birthday is the 23rd.) If you haven't visited it before, I suggest you stop reading this newsletter and click to check it out.

Ask & Answer

Concerning opening bids for auction items - while I've only run two auctions (and they were actually overseen by Tigger thinks of Prancer Author Icon, but we talked about it a lot), I'm of the considered opinion that a person offering goods or services at auction shouldn't undervalue themselves. I cringe whenever I see "20 in-depth reviews" with an opening bid of 1000 gps. Sure, you'll get bids - but this conveys the message that your several hours of time reading and reviewing just isn't worth that much.

Now, I don't have a magic formula for where to start bidding - and I agree it should start below the item's actual value - but as a business owner, I do know that if people get the idea that something is cheap, they won't think of it as valuable.

Very true, Robert. My intention wasn't to encourage future auctioneers to start their bidding too low, but to explain that starting an item too high won't encourage bidders to jump in. Half of the fun in bidding in an auction is on the actual act of bidding, especially if you get in a bidding war with another bidder. *Smile*
