Janus was the Roman spirit of doorways (januae) and archways (jani). Time-wise, this goes back even further than the times of Romulus and Remus. There were many jani in Rome. These spiritual doorways were important to the citizenry of Rome. The main Janus gate was only closed in times of peace and was only actually closed twice in close to 700 years!
Janus was considered the god of all beginnings whether the month, the day, or the year. He was also considered the god of doorways and was often symbolized by the two-faced god at the top of the doorways depicted on both sides of the door or gate.
January, named after this god of new beginnings, seems like the time people look ahead and consider their lives, expectations, and changes they'd like to see happen. Hence, the time of resolutions. Personally, I am not a big fan of resolutions so if I am going to try to change a behavior, I'll just change it. However, being rather set in my ways and close to seventy years old, if I haven't enacted a change by now, the chances are fairly slim (to none) of my doing it ever.
Writing-wise is where I am most likely to think of writing goals that I'd like to see happen. They will. Or maybe not. As long as I'm writing, I'm good. Sure, time permitting, I'd like to finish the three books that are mid-write. I'd love to have time to start the other several books meandering around inside my head. Came up with a great title last week that needs a book behind it. As yet, I have no clue about what. First things first.
While not big on resolutions, I do rather enjoy the feeling of new beginnings (or continuations) that a new year brings. I always feel more hopeful and more adventuous. Kind of like the way I feel on the first days of vacation. It is a time when almost anything is possible!
So this New Year's, I wish you endless possibilities!

Quick-Quill  writes: your story was a gift, with my eyes filled with tears, I too have stood at the back of the crowd an enjoyed from afar the joy others felt. I wasn't good enough, too fat, too stupid and I wore thick glasses. Now I still wear my glasses as a badge of pride for all the books I've read and now the few I've written. This story allows the reader to see the beauty that was there, when you had looked at the angel at the top of the tree and found it looked like you.
