Here Be Dragons

If you know me at all, you know that I am not a poet. Does that stop me from writing or reviewing poetry?

It does not.

I try to approach poetry with humility, whether I am writing it or reviewing it. I may not know much about it, but that doesn't mean that poetry has no meaning for me. It doesn't mean that a poem can't make me feel a certain way or even fail to make me feel a certain way.

I have noticed that many people who write poetry on WdC put a little note about the form of the poem. As a reader and reviewer, I appreciate this. It helps me understand the structure of the poem. I even learn a little something from these notes.

I am not likely to comment on the structure, or the bones of your poem as a reviewer, because I don't feel I am qualified. I am not likely to be critical of these things unless something stands out to me that might be a potential problem. I focus my comments on the language and the emotional content of the poem. As a reviewer, I should work with what I know.

I named my poetry folder in my port Here Be Dragons after the maps of old where that label would be used on unexplored, uncharted areas. If you see one of my poems, know that I did my best and could use some gentle guidance. If you receive a review from me on one of your poems, read it to discover what a non-poet got from your writing. It may be more illuminating than you might think it would be.
