What Is a Poetry Chain?
Much like an interactive story that grows chapter by chapter, a poetry chain is a collaborative project that grows verse by verse, contributed by different poets. Each poet speaks by adding their lines, responding to what came before, and setting the stage for what follows. This poetic relay celebrates a diversity of voices while adhering to a shared theme or inspiration.
How Do You Create a Poetry Chain?
The chain begins with an initial verse, usually provided by the chain’s creator. This verse sets the tone and theme for the chain and acts as a creative spark for subsequent contributions.
Once the starting verse is posted, other poets are invited to contribute. Sometimes, it’s an open forum where anyone can post at any time, but not always. It’s not uncommon for entries to be vetted before posting or for additions to be by invitation only. Each poet is encouraged to add their unique voice to the evolving poem while remaining within the theme.
It’s also common to ask poets to:
Limit their additions to a specific number of lines to keep the poem balanced
Keep a logical connection to the verse prior
Build on existing content and not distract from the overall poem or go on tangents
Remember that you are not the main character in this adventure. You’re here to enhance the entire chain, not overtake it.
Since it is an iterative process, new contributions grow the poem organically over time. The theme may shift tonally depending on the season, socioeconomic conditions, and other factors. Both writer and reader should be able to engage the various sections and notice an ebb and flow as the narrative shifts and deepens.
Why Participate in a Poetry Chain?
Poetry chains are an excellent way to stretch your writing skills. As part of a larger narrative, the exercise is designed to transcend individual voices, meaning you’ll explore your abilities to be strong and subdued. You’ll be challenged to collaborate with a diverse group and understand how your writing is interpreted by the person who comes after you. It offers an expansive view of how different poets perceive poetic themes.
Strong but subdued doesn’t diminish your contribution or your abilities. Your verse(s) lets you let your unique voice through while remaining part of the larger narrative. Think of it as a representation of unity, where you continue to tell the stories of those who came before you while leaving inspiration for those who come after.
Your job is to be a vital link in the chain, ensuring you provide something unique within the larger story. Do your job right, and your voice won’t be lost. Instead, it will impact the reader when they come to your verse. When each poet treats their verse as impactful but part of the whole, the reader is moved by the poem. Isn’t that what every poet wants?
