Festivities Mid Point

The Writing.Com birthday week is at its mid point.

Take a moment to take inventory of your accomplishments in "Writing.Com Party Central 2024!Open in new Window. and then see what else there is to write, review, play, take part in. While the official festivities presented by the site owners last only the first seven days of September, many member-run activities go longer with some giving you up until the last day of the month to make your mark. There are so many fun, weird, challenging, unique things going on that you should at least check out once. Give all of them a try.

The best part is that while you plan out the week, you can also plan out the month.
Once you have a firm grasp on all of the things to accomplish for the rest of September, look ahead at the remaining months of the year.

Give yourself goals. Look at each specific contest or activity and work on an entry. Track your writing in a separate note or even on paper to measure your successes. While not all of it seems achievable, you can only find out if you tackle each one with gusto. Every time you push through any doubts and create something new, you are creating something relevant for yourself. Even if you're not fully happy with it now in the short time that you have, earmark it to come back later to it. Keep the deadlines of the contests you enter in mind. In September, the last day to take part could be the seventh, tenth, the twenty-first, the thirtieth, or any day in between.

Running at full speed for a whole week can feel like a lot to do, but it will make you able to see the end. Allow that panic to drive you forward. Then carry that momentum into the rest of the year. Whether you use the energy to pursue the creation of more contest entries or putting more focus on the creation or editing of your fictional worlds, take the organizational skills that you develop during this week with you.

What kind of system do you use to keep track of a large number of varied tasks?

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last For Authors newsletter "Unforgettable CharactersOpen in new Window. that asked As you create a new character, do you ask "Who, what, where, when, why?"

Nostrum Author Icon wrote: I prefer in-story interactions to discover more about my characters. Just simple conversations where they ask about each other - whether they're meeting for the first time or seeing each other again after a while. This serves a similar purpose to making an imaginary interview but in-medium, and also reveals some of their personality traits as they emerge naturally.

That works.

Averren Author Icon wrote: Thanks, Annette.
Love the article. I am learning that knowing my characters (or not knowing them) is playing a critical role in how slowly my book is going. I have seen the novel prep challenge in years past. I admit fear kept me away. I think I will do it this year.
Thanks for a great article.

The Novel Prep Challenge is tough, but it is the single greatest thing you can do to dig deep into your characters, plot, and fictional world.

Great advice.
