Quote for the week:

"Mystery spread its cloak across the sky.
We lost our way.
Shadows fell from trees.
They knew why."

Letter from the editor

I grew up near a huge lake that did not exist before 1953. Lake Sakakawea was created when the Garrison Dam was built as part of a network of dams to hold back the waters of the Missouri River and prevent downstream flooding. Before the dam was built, the land now covered by the lake included farmland and even several small towns.

Since the flooding of this area was planned, people had the chance to remove any items of value before the dam was built. Two entire towns were actually relocated to higher ground. However, many remnants of the farms and towns that were once there still remain.

People who scuba dive in the lake say that exploring the bottom of the deepest areas is dangerous because it includes objects such as old farm equipment, the remains of buildings, and barbed wire.

The area under Lake Sakakawea or any artificial lake would be a great setting for a mystery story. What if something of value was inadvertently left behind, and present day explorers want to go back and find it? Or maybe the flooding of the area concealed the place where a body was hidden or other evidence of a serious crime.

A mystery of this type would involve divers, hydrologists, limnologists, and other experts in addition to conventional detectives. If you do write a mystery where the crime scene is underwater, make sure and do research to find out how this type of crime would be investigated to keep your story realistic.

I once had a dream that years before the Garrison Dam was built, a murder victim was hidden in a well that is now covered by the lake water. I have always thought the dream might be a good basis for a mystery story. If anyone wants to write it, I'd love to read it!

Something to try: Write a mystery story where the crime scene is under water.
