Letter from the editor

We are all familiar with the “Motion Picture Association Rating System”, I’m sure. You know, G, PG, PG-13, R, and X. Well, Writing.com employs a similar rating system so that readers will have an idea what they’re getting into when they click on an item. Therefore, it’s important we all understand and properly use the rating system.

Before I explain WdC’s rating system, allow me to explain why it’s important to use it as intended:

*Bulletg* WdC welcomes members of all ages. This includes kids under the age of 18.

*Bulletg* We don’t all have the same tolerance for profanity or explicit writing. Proper rating helps readers avoid things they won’t be comfortable reading.

*Bulletg* What one person sees as ‘no big deal’, others find offensive. WdC does not sensor your writing, but we ask that you rate it properly. Understanding the rating system makes things easier for all of us; readers and moderators alike. *Wink*

The WdC rating system uses the following system:

E: Everyone
ASR: Adult Supervision Recommended
13+: Recommended for Readers 13 Years and Older Only
18+: Recommended for Readers 18 Years and Older Only
GC: May Contain Graphic Content
XGC: May Contain Extreme Graphic Content

Great NL about reviewing. I appreciate the criteria you outlined for giving certain ratings. I think it's very helpful, especially for newer reviewers.

*Heartp* Thank you very much, Steph!

I strongly feel that if you give a review without one suggestion for improvement, that means the piece is perfect as it is and deserves a five-star review.

What I am trying to say is that reviews need to match the star rating. If you give my item three stars, then you need to tell me what my weak spots are. Glossing over the issues that need to be fixed is very inconsiderate. Does that mean you have to find and suggest fixes for every problem? Of course not! The star rating should match the review, plan and simple.

By the way, folks, you can set your items to "REVIEW ONLY" so you don't have to worry about what star rating someone would give you.

*Heartp* Absolutely! Thank you for chiming in on this important issue!

This should be compulsory reading for reviewers. Way too many just give five stars for work that needs work. There's not hurting someone's feelings, and then there's deluding them their writing does not need some improvement. I try not to review stuff I am going to give less than 3 stars to, but lately I have found myself handing out 2, 2.5 stars because I can see the potential there...

Maybe I'm just a bad person. Dunno.

*Heartp* Thank you for reading and commenting! I think many of us agree, the content of the review should back up the rating. If we are giving someone 2 or three stars, we should be explaining the ways their piece can be improved.

This is a great newsletter and I think something a lot of people need to read. I’ve learned quickly that a lot of ratings are irrelevant. I see people leaving 3 stars but not offering any insight as to why. Constructive criticism is important.

*Heartp* Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts.I agree with you!
