Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
As a romance writer, I find love triangles icky, but I suppose that’s just me. A love triangle is where 2 potential suitors are vying for the love of someone else. Love triangles have been found in theatre, film, and literature throughout time. Elizabeth Bennett, Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Wickham come to mind. One nasty little creature you might find in a love triangle is jealously. Another pest is unrequited love. Love triangles can be challenging to write, but if done well, all three characters come out smelling like roses.
I remember when I was young, I loved watching the soap operas. They had a TON of love triangles. Enjoy this word search!

Writing love triangles for Romance stories is never easy, but if you write them well, all three characters benefit. So what are some things you should consider when writing a love triangle?
A love triangle involves 3 people. There’s the protagonist who has suitor A and suitor B. Who will win his or her heart?
One of the first things that must be done, and done well is to fully develop each character. When the reader or viewer really knows all three characters, then the war on the heart can begin in earnest. What makes the characters unique? Each of the people in the triangle must have their own opinions, thoughts, world views, fears, hopes, and goals. Without this, readers tend to gravitate to the suitor who is most fleshed out.
The protagonist must have a valid reason for caring for both suitors. Each suitor has to bring something to the table that the protagonist likes.
Once the protagonist gets to know the suitors, there must be a decisive decision. If the protagonist waffles too long in making a decision, then the triangle loses creditability. Here’s an example: In Hunger Games, Katniss must choose between Gayle, who is represents her past and Peeta who represents her present.
The protagonist doesn’t have to meet their suitors at the same time, but keep in mind, what’s at stake is the protagonist’s decision.
Before sitting down to write, keep in mind if the love triangle is center to a romance story or is a romantic subplot in a bigger novel/movie. Also if you’re going to write a love triangle make sure there’s a solid reason to put it in the story and it feels organic to the plot. How does the love triangle develop all three characters? Is there a 2nd story for the character who isn’t chosen?

I am so over Vampires!!! The evolution has turned me off. I loved Christine Feehan. She wrote a series called Mind Games. Wow, it was great. I have a crime novel where the main character rejects, she may be gifted because her father was called the Psychic Sheriff. He always got his man. As she searches for a serial killer, her gift helps her even when she tries to ignore it. It's also a romance between her and the new FBI agent she's teamed with. I think a little paranormal in any genre is good.
I feel ya. I do think vampires have been overly used lately. I like the idea/concept of “Mind Games.” I might have to check it out.
