About This Newsletter

Quote for the week:

"Mystery spread its cloak across the sky.
We lost our way.
Shadows fell from trees.
They knew why."

Letter from the editor

Love can be a mystery, and it is also a good subject for mystery stories. Along with greed and revenge, love is one of the strongest motives for murder and other crimes.

Love is the only emotion that is stronger than hate. It is often said that the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference.

What would you do for those you love? Love is often the one thing that would cause a normally law abiding person to commit a crime. For example, a person would could not ordinarily imagine harming another human being might commit murder to protect someone they love.

For some people, love can become twisted in a way that is very dangerous. For some narcissistic individuals, love means possession and control. A love relationship with this type of person will be a nightmare. They are often good at hiding their true nature, so most people they know might have a hard time imagining them becoming violent or abusive. If the guilty party in your story is one of these people, try to leave subtle clues of their true nature for the reader.

Someone who is out of contact with reality might imagine that they are in a love relationship that doesn't actually exist for the other person. They might not really know the person at all, or might be only acquaintances. In some cases, they might imagine a love relationship with someone who is not actually present at all. For example, a disturbed individual might imagine a dead spouse is still alive or might imagine a relationship with someone who is a creation of their mind.

Something to try: Write a mystery story where the motive for a crime is love.
