O

ften, it takes an incentive to get people to help out. There's nothing wrong with that, and it is certainly human nature to want a return on an investment of time and effort.

This brings me a question I have received multiple times from various people: what can I do to promote my contest or activity without spamming the newsfeed?

First piece of advice I would freely give is to make sure your newsfeed posts are being received by a wide range of people. You can do this by putting lots of people in your "favorites". Don't forget to add people occasionally. If you spot someone you haven't favorited, go ahead and do it. Remember, you can always take them off that list if it turns out to be someone you don't care to hear from much.

So, where might you find people that aren't already in your favorites list? You can go to the Community Newsfeed, first of all. Remember, you have to choose to see that, the default is your Personal Newsfeed. Look for people posting or commenting on posts that show a gray heart in their handle. A black heart indicates they are already a favorite, a gold heart indicates you are that person's fan.

Click on all the gray hearts! Now you will show up on their newsfeed and vice versa.

Now back to the bribes incentives.

Once you have a nice, lengthy favorites list, you can level up your game. Post on newsfeed that you would like other people to help you get the word out about your contest or activity. Offer some GPs for a post with the link to your contest/activity, or offer a drawing for a merit badge of all the people that do this...or both, if you really want to get people's attention.

You can also pick a small prize that has the potential to be something bigger. How about offering to buy a raffle ticket (or offer a free one from your own raffle). If they win the raffle, they may end up with a really nice prize. (If you are reading this newsletter in November or December of 2024, I have listed the activities that are currently open that offer tickets for prize drawings. See Editor's Picks below.)

Another option would be to do a trade: have someone post a link to your activity and you do the same for whatever they are needing promoted.

Why have someone else post for you? Well, they may reach people you wouldn't with your post. Also, it feels less like newsfeed spamming if it comes from other sources. Other people will have a different posting style, so it can sometimes create more interest.

Have a plan in place, notify people on newsfeed what you need done and what they will or can get in return. Make sure you follow through. Even if one or two people take you up on your offer, you will still reap the benefit of getting the word out about your activity.

Ask & Answer

Feedback from my last Contest & Activities Newsletter "Getting It DoneOpen in new Window..

I asked the question: Do you find yourself hyperfocusing? If so, does it help you complete projects? Here are some answers to that question.

I was diagnosed with ADHD just a few short years ago, and the only way I can hyper focus is if the task I need to complete interests me. Luckily, house chores and cooking are on my interests list, so I can usually dive into a deep cleaning project or meal prepping, and get it done.
Now writing is a different story. If I have a plot idea in my head, I can totally focus on it, and get a story written. I am not so good at writing on the fly, though.
That makes perfect sense to me. Unfortunately for me, I hyperfocus on writing, too.

I could've written this newsletter word for word! I know exactly what you mean!

And the only way I can stick to a cleaning/re-organizing of closets, etc., is to listen to a good audio book on my phone. Weird, eh? But it works like a charm (for me.)

Also, I used to label my summers with whatever I was hyper focused on that year, such as "Summer of the Violin" or "Summer of Logic Puzzles" or "Summer of Genealogy" or whatever. *Laugh*

I suppose I march to the beat of my own drum!
I don't have the memory capacity to remember when I focused on any particular thing, but I think that's pretty amusing *Laugh*

I have BPD and have trouble focusing on anything. Hyperfocus? Out of the question.
Lack of focus can be frustrating, but I am not sure you are missing out with the hyperfocusing.

Pumpkin Harvest Author Icon
I can't hyper focus. I have to work at more than one project at a time in order to keep my ideas flowing.
That works for a lot of people.

I hyper focus on all the wrong things *Headbang*}
Oh, don't I know all about that. I cannot control what I hyperfocus on, and it is often the wrong thing.

Who Know's? Author Icon
I can't focus until I can. Then I can't stop!
Sounds very familiar!
